College Admissions Essay Editing and Consulting
As a college admissions essay specialist, I offer in-depth consulting and editing services for personal statements, supplemental essays , statements of purpose, PIQs (UCs), and any other written documents to be submitted with your college application. I work with students at any stage of the writing process – from brainstorming essay topics to proofreading final drafts. My editing technique can be characterized as perfectionistic, detail-oriented, and rigorous – which means you can expect a heavy-handed and involved approach that includes copious comments, direct edits, suggested rewrites, placeholder text, and multiple essay drafts.
Despite it being a (shameful) standard practice in the world of educational consulting, I do not filter clients based on their GPAs, academic records, and test scores. Unfortunately, many consultants will not work with students applying to top-tier schools unless they are absolutely certain they will get accepted to those schools, as consultants are likelier to achieve immaculate outcomes based on these filters and conditions. For example, a client whom I worked with in 2022-2023 came to me after their consultant refused to help them apply to Rochester, NYU, and UCLA, stating they had “no chance” of getting in. I, however, believe that you miss 100% of the shots you never make (to quote Canadian hockey legend Wayne Gretzky), and in the competitive edge of an exceptionally well-written essay. With my help, this student was admitted to all three of these schools (including others, such as USC and UNC Chapel Hill). The consultant then contacted my client, months later, to find out what schools they were accepted to – ostensibly to publish the results on their own web site.
Process
Initial coaching sessions include reviewing a requested writing sample, identifying target majors and schools, determining a tentative timeline for our work together, and in-depth exploration of students’ experiences, values, interests, and any other relevant information that will help me get to know you. Unless you contact me for a final proofread of an already meticulously edited draft a day before it is due, I often find this session to be imperative to generate essays that project authentic experiences, tying in well to the rest of the application. It is also an opportunity for us to get to know one another on a deeper level, as I believe this level of closeness, trust, and respect is necessary to yield the best possible results.
I edit shared drafts in Google Docs, where you can see my tracked changes and time stamps on my work, though some clients will request direct edits without tracked changes in the interest of saving their own time. Meetings to discuss essays are held over the phone or on Google Meet. I charge the same rate for meetings and independent editing time. I do not charge for initial consultation calls (which I offer without the standard, arbitrary 20-30 min time limit), nor do I charge for quick communications and check-ins between edits and meetings via email or text. If I feel that any question or topic warrants a longer conversation (say, you want to go through an entire draft line by line), I will suggest that we book a meeting instead.
Unlike the majority of educational consultants, who do not specialize in essay writing or have professional writing experience, I do not outsource my work to other editors, nor do I employ interns, assistants, or use any AI content generation tools. All clients work with me, one-on-one, and me alone. There are no backup writers and editors. As such, I only accept a limited number of clients and encourage my clients to submit drafts to me well ahead of their deadlines.
Though I advertise on a few platforms, where you can read some reviews, most of my clients come to me through referrals or word-of-mouth from satisfied clients. As testimonials and success records can easily be faked (including email and text screenshots), and not so easily verified, I only share reviews that have been verified through platforms I’ve worked on in the past. Ultimately, if you do not have the benefit of knowing someone who has already worked with me, the value I provide will be evident from our first sessions – and as there is no contract for you to sign, nor any package you are required to pay for up front, your commitment is virtually risk-free.
RATE
My services are priced competitively at $125 USD per hour, in order to maintain a fair rate for my Canadian clients. Canadian sales tax is rolled into my converted rate. I do not offer packages, nor do I offer discounts.
Do not hesitate to contact me for a free consultation in order to determine if I am the right coach and editor for your needs.
